Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization Standards Activity Committee

Learn more about the SISO SAC Standards Committee, it's mission, members, and more.

In 2003 the IEEE Computer Society Standards Activities Board (SAB) recognized the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) Standards Activity Committee (SAC) as the Computer / Simulation Interoperability (C/SI) SISO SAC Standards Committee.

The Computer/Simulation Interoperability (C/SI) Standards Committee is represented by the SISO SAC. It is responsible for the maintenance of an existing portfolio of standards via 3 working groups, each with active projects:

C/SI sponsors three series of IEEE Standards:

  • IEEE Std 1278TM — Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS). Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS). DIS is a simulation interoperability standard that provides simulation applications with the ability to communicate and exchange information.
  • IEEE Std 1516TM — High Level Architecture (HLA). High Level Architecture (HLA). HLA is a standard for distributed simulation, used when building a simulation for a larger purpose by combining (federating) several simulations.
  • IEEE Std 1730TM — Distributed Simulation Engineering and Execution Process (DSEEP). Distributed Simulation Engineering and Execution Process (DSEEP). DSEEP is a standardized process for building federations of computer simulations.
  • In 2015 the IEEE Standards Association Standards Board (SASB) re-authorized C/SI for standards development. The C/SI SISO SAC Representative is SISO's primary contact for all IEEE Standards activities. C/SI policies and procedures for standards development are valid thru 31 Dec 2020.

SISO is an international organization dedicated to the promotion of modeling and simulation (M&S) interoperability and reuse for the benefit of a broad range of M&S communities including developers, procurers, and users worldwide.

Stakeholders: anyone involved with the acquisition, development or operation of simulation systems that will be used in a distributed manner. These standards are required to support a coherent approach to distributed simulation

    Generality

Standards Products shall be as general as possible, while still maintaining usefulness, to support the broadest community of current and future users.

    Stability

Standards Products shall be established and changed only as necessary. They shall be prototyped and tested before being proposed for adoption to demonstrate their maturity.

    Supportability

Standards Products shall maintain the integrity of the existing product suite and the needs of the user.

    Highlights

IEEE 1278 series - Each standard and recommended practice in this set describes one or more of the elements that constitute the DIS environment. DIS consists of the following standards:

  • IEEE 1278.1-2012, IEEE Standard for Distributed Interactive Simulation - Application Protocols
  • IEEE 1278.2-2015, IEEE Standard for Distributed Interactive Simulation - Communication Services and Profiles
  • IEEE 1278.3-1996, IEEE Standard for Distributed Interactive Simulation Exercise Management & Feedback (EMF) - Recommended Practice (superseded by IEEE 1730TM-2010)
  • IEEE 1278.4-2003, IEEE Recommended Practice for Distributed Interactive Simulation - Verification Validation & Accreditation (reaffirmed 2010)
  • IEEE 1516 series – This standard, describing the framework and rules of the HLA, is the capstone document for a family of related HLA standards. It defines the HLA, its components, and the rules that outline the responsibilities of HLA federates and federations to ensure a consistent implementation. Simulations are abstractions of the real world, and no one simulation can solve all of the functional needs for the modeling and simulation community. HLA consists of the following standards:

  • IEEE Std 1516™-2010, IEEE Standard for Modeling and Simulation High Level Architecture — Framework and Rules
  • IEEE Std 1516.1™-2010, IEEE Standard for Modeling and Simulation High Level Architecture — Federate Interface Specification
  • IEEE Std 1516.2™-2010, IEEE Standard for Modeling and Simulation High Level Architecture — Object Model Template Specification
  • IEEE 1730 - DSEEP can be used together with several interoperability standards, such as HLA or DIS.
