HackEthix 2025: Training Kerala’s Next Generation of Cyber Defenders

The IEEE Student Branch of Mohandas College of Engineering and Technology (MCET) brought the tech community together with HackEthix 2025. The July 19, 2025, event at the MCET campus in Trivandrum was Kerala’s largest one-day cybersecurity workshop championed by the Computer Society Chapter Grant Initiative. It’s a crucial first step in training and equipping the next generation of cyber professionals.

Cybersecurity already faces a talent shortage and skills gap. Global security job vacancies grew by 350% from 2012 to 2021, and the gap is only growing more severe. HackEthix’s goal was to equip young professionals with practical tools and basic knowledge of strong cybersecurity principles. It also combined deep technical instruction and a strong focus on ethical responsibility.

A Mutual Partnership for Progress

This first-of-its-kind event was a collaborative effort between IEEE SB MCET, IEEE SB Kottarakkara, and IEEE Marian SB. Partnering with Offenso Hackers Academy, one of Kerala’s leading cybersecurity training institutes, the teams blended the best of both worlds to train and equip the next generation of skilled cyber defenders.

The workshop brought in over 300 students from various colleges, highlighting the intense desire for tactical education for Kerala’s youth. The event also welcomed both IEEE members and non-members, bringing together anyone looking for networking, professional development, and collaboration within cybersecurity.

Creating a Full Day of Hands-On Cybersecurity Training

Instead of the dry traditional lecture, HackEthix 2025 focused on a practical, hands-on approach. The organizers implemented a “workshop village” model, where sessions were divided into focused technical tracks. Participants could focus on their unique areas of interest to gain specialized, in-depth support.

Emphasizing Technical Training Doesn’t Have to Be Boring

While technical sessions were the core of the event, HackEthix 2025 also emphasized community and collaboration. Networking sessions, music, and dramatic smoke effects were just a few of the ways to loosen up the room and encourage creative thinking. The day ended on a high note with a live band performance by Marian SB and a reminder that traditionally dry, technical learning can still be light-hearted and fun.

HackEthix 2025 was an incredible event for Kerala’s cybersecurity community. Students walked away with networking skills, hands-on development, and a dream to work toward for their future careers. With over 100 IEEE members and more than 200 non-members in attendance, its impact extended far beyond a single organization. Events like HackEthix continue to be instrumental in developing the next generation of cyber professionals, sparking ideas, and inspiring future innovators and leaders.
